10 Selfish Reasons to Volunteer for the “Selfie” Generation
10. It’s good for you …. And it makes you look good
Lets face it - everyone thinks our generation is lazy. Volunteering is not only a proven way to reduce stress and help you feel happier - it is also the sign of someone that cares about their community. Employers, Graduate Programs, friends and even the media will take notice of someone who gives their time to deserving causes.
9. Network is your net worth
Many nonprofits have dedicated philanthropist who are actively involved in the organization. Volunteering is a great way to gain access to these highly influential (and normally off-limits) individuals and meet potential mentors.
8. Gives you something valuable to talk about
As a millennial, many of us feel a pressure to continually produce content for social media platforms. Involvement with a nonprofit not only gives you something valuable to say but sharing your work online will connect you with whole communities of like-minded supporters.
7. Volunteering is a lot cheaper than formal education
Volunteering is one of the best ways to gain hands on experience in your field and it doesn’t cost a penny in tuition. In a world where we are drowning in student loan debt, working with an organization is a great way to supplement your education, build your resume and connect with amazing references.
6. Test drive a new career
Thinking of making a change? What better way to see if you will enjoy your new career than trying it on for size. Nonprofits need help with all kinds of things - marketing, event production, sponsorship outreach, copy writing, etc. Offer to help and I think you’ll be surprised how often people are happy to have you jump in.
5. It’s Hard to Make Friends as an Adult
One of the best ways to make new friends and strengthen existing relationships is to commit to a shared activity together. And lets face it, after college it gets much harder to make “real” friends - working with a nonprofit that serves a community close to your heart is a great way to meet like-minded people from all walks of life. Your next charitable project could be where you meet your new boyfriend, girlfriend, and/or best friend. Besides, good Samaritans make great buddies and often are the most interesting people.
4. It’s Branding
In this day and age - getting work is based just as much on who you are perceived to be as what your qualifications are. Alining yourself with charitable causes that reflect your world view is just good business practice.
3. Free Stuff, Perks & Media
Who doesn’t like to be treated like a rock-star? Many volunteer opportunities, especially those in areas like Los Angeles and New York, come with cool perks such as swag bags, red-carpet access, and more. Plus the fancy events are an excuse to put on your favorite outfit that is collecting dust in the back of your closet.
2. Be Happier & More Fulfilled
Helping others feels good and raises those happy checmicals in the brain. Volunteering can also cultivate a attitude of gratitude when you see just how lucky you really are in comparison to so many others. And speaking from personal experience, gratitude will change your life.
1. You Get to make Difference
Volunteering is one of the best ways I know to leave a lasting impact on the world and change the life of someone in need. Life is richer when you live more for others and less for yourself. “Be the change you want to see in the world” and leave a legacy of positivity.
